Plasticity in the Primary Auditory Cortex: Substrate of Specific Long-Term Memory Traces

چکیده
Glossary Best frequency (BF) – The frequency that produces the best cellular response to a frequency at a given soundlevel intensity. Conditioned response (CR) – A behavioral response that is elicited by a conditioned stimulus as a result of classical or instrumental conditioning. Conditioned stimulus (CS) – An initially neutral stimulus that elicits a behavioral response after it has been associated with an unconditioned stimulus. Frequency receptive field (frequency RF) – The portion of the acoustic spectrum to which a cell in the auditory system is sensitive. Frequency RFs are often called ‘tuning curves.’ Local field potentials (LFPs) – Responses of sensory (auditory) cortex to sensory (acoustic) stimuli, which are comprised of evoked voltage changes in the low-frequency range (1–300 Hz). They generally index excitatory postsynaptic potentials recorded in extracellular space with a large electrode on the surface or in the depths of the cortex. Tonotopic map – The progressive distribution of best frequencies across primary auditory cortex. The posterior-to-anterior axis has a systematic range of BFs, from lower to higher, respectively. Unconditioned response (UR) – An innate behavioral response that is elicited by a stimulus in the absence of conditioning. Unconditioned stimulus (US) – A stimulus that elicits a UR.

Effects of Neonatal C-Fiber Depletion on Interaction between Neocortical Short-Term and Long-Term Plasticity
Introduction: The primary somatosensory cortex has an important role in nociceptive sensory-discriminative processing. Altered peripheral inputs produced by deafferentation or by long-term changes in levels of afferent stimulation can result in plasticity of cortex. Capsaicin-induced depletion of C-fiber afferents results in plasticity of the somatosensory system. Plasticity includes short-term...
متن کاملPhysiological memory in primary auditory cortex: characteristics and mechanisms.
"Physiological memory" is enduring neuronal change sufficiently specific to represent learned information. It transcends both sensory traces that are detailed but transient and long-term physiological plasticities that are insufficiently specific to actually represent cardinal details of an experience. The specificity of most physiological plasticities has not been comprehensively studied. We a...
متن کاملLearning-Induced Receptive Field Plasticity in the Primary Auditory Cortex
Primary sensory cortex in the adult is modified by learning. The primary auditory cortex is retuned when a tone is paired with a behaviorally relevant reinforcer. Frequency receptive fields are shifted toward or to the frequency of the signal stimulus, yielding enhanced processing and representation of important frequencies. Receptive field plasticity constitutes ‘‘physiological memory’’ becaus...
متن کاملAuditory associative memory and representational plasticity in the primary auditory cortex.
Historically, the primary auditory cortex has been largely ignored as a substrate of auditory memory, perhaps because studies of associative learning could not reveal the plasticity of receptive fields (RFs). The use of a unified experimental design, in which RFs are obtained before and after standard training (e.g., classical and instrumental conditioning) revealed associative representational...
متن کاملP19: Long-Term Potentiation
The term synaptic plasticity points to a series of persistent changes related to the activity of synapses. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a reflection of synaptic plasticity that has an important role in learning and memory. LTP is a long-lasting increase of synaptic activity due to enhancement of excitatory synaptic transmission after a high-frequency train of electrical stimulations. Differe...
